History of Goa

Goa’s history goes way back in time. Mesolithic or Upper Paleolithic rock art carvings have been discovered in Goa. Similarly, choppers, stone axes, and cones were found as well. It has also been discovered that Goa was inhabited by Sumerians somewhere around 2200 BC. This was followed by the rampage of Dravidians from the Deccan and Indo-Aryan people. Goa became a part of the Mauryan empire in 3rd Century B.C. under ‘Ashoka, The Great’. After this, Goa was ruled by numerous other dynasties such as Chutus, Western Kshatrapas, and Chalukyas of Kalyani. In 1312 AD, Goa fell to the Delhi Sultanate and was captured by the Portuguese in 1510. Finally, the history of Goa came full circle, when it attained independence and became a part of India in 1961 after an armed confrontation between Indian and Portuguese troops.
